Almost all of Henry's children ended up in Alabama within just a few miles of one another.

Henry lll Shackelford (Martha Mann Shackelford's son) came to Shelby Co AL in C-1839, he's on the 1840 Shelby Co Al census as Henry Shackelford, page 51 and on the 1850 Shelby Co AL census on pg0209a.txt

    Shackelford Phillip NOT BORN YET

If you notice,Sarah was born in Georgia and is 12 years old on the 1850 census. This would make her birth date sometime around 1838 in GA and Lucy was born in Alabama and is 10 years old on the 1850 census which would make her birth date around 1840. It appears Henry lll Shackelford left GA around 1838 or a little after without his family and probably so he could check out the area and secure a homeplace for the family which awaited his return in Ga. Henry had to be in Alabama by 1840 or a little earlier because of Lucy's birth date and because he shows up on the 1840 census alone. Then on the 1850 census he shows there with the rest of his family and by the ages of the new children it appears he made up for lost time quite efficiently.

A little later, about 1858 Starling Madison Shackelford, John James Thomas Shackelford and John Hubbard Shackelford (2 sons and a grandson of Martha Mann Shackelford) left from Georgia and settled in Fayette county Alabama which is one county to the west of Jefferson county and you also have Henry lll Shackelford one county to the south of Jefferson in Shelby County Alabama.

Henry Shackelford Jr had died around 1827 and his widowed wife Martha (Mann) Shackelford went to Jefferson county Alabama to live with her daughter Martha Ann Robertson. I live close to this area and the mere fact that all of these families settled extremely close to one another, Paschal and Zadoc coming here first around 1817 then Henry lll Shackelford coming around 1839 (his family coming a little later), Martha Ann who married Peter Robertson and was the daughter of Henry Shackelford and Martha Mann Shackelford moved here also and was just a few houses away from Paschal and Zadock and still yet a little later, around 1858,Starling Madison Shackelford, John James and John Hubbard Shackelford all moving very close to Paschal, Zadock, Martha Ann (sister) , Martha Mann (mother) leads me to believe that Paschal and Zadock were close relation to Henry Shackelford's family. These counties are all within 1 hour by way of automobile and they could have all visited each other by wagon any given day.

The 1860 Fayette county Alabama census shows S.M. Shackelford, J.J. Shackelford and J.H. Shackelford living next door to each other. S.M. is Starling Madison who was 47 years old in 1860 and was brother to J.H. who was John Hubbard Shackelford and J.J. was John James Thomas Shackelford, Starlings 2nd oldest child J.J. was married to Mary and had his own house. We can determine that they made the trip from Georgia to Fayette county Alabama within a year or two of 1858. All Starling's children were born in Georgia, even the 3 year old Nancy but the last 1 year old was born in Alabama. That was Martin and a few years after that James was born in ALabama. J.J. had a 3 year old born in Georgia and John Hubbard Shackelford had none born in AL at the time of this census so they had to come to Alabama after the 3 year old was born and because of the one year old it would mean around 1858. Henry had died earlier and his wife Martha with some of her children went to Jefferson county Alabama while S.M, J.J. and J.H. contiued on another two counties farther and ended up in Fayette county.
